Quitting antidepressants

Quitting antidepressants brings you back to a normal life.

Although many do not want to admit it, marijuana is a drug. Along with hallucinogenic drugs, it creates a strong addiction, which leads to numerous health and social problems, so it is not surprising that drugs have been declared illegal psychoactive substances each country combats.

On the other hand, there are legally acceptable substances – alcoholic drinks. Unfortunately, one glass necessarily leads to another, even to the next day of intoxication, so at one point, almost unobtrusively, it turns into chronic alcoholism, leaving dangerous consequences.

But where to classify medications? Some medicines we use with the doctor’s approval pose the same risk as drugs. Recent research indicates that pill abuse is the leading concern in modern times. Namely, about 5 percent of the population suffers from this addictive disorder, while over 120,000 cases are registered in our country, although the number of those who take antidepressants on their own hook is considered to be much higher.

What antidepressant withdrawal includes is presented to you by Dr Vorobiev clinic.

Since their discovery, people have been split on antidepressants

Antidepressants are psychotropic medications used to ease mood disorders. They treat severe depression, but also milder depressive and anxiety disorders, then, phobias and fears, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, certain eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

They were discovered by accident in the mid-20th century. Irving Selikoff and Edward H. Robitzek began clinical trials for two new tuberculosis medications developed by Hoffman-LaRoche pharmaceutical company. Initially, only patients with poor prognosis were treated, and not only improvement in underlying disease, but also the incredible flow of energy, was noticed very quickly.

This discovery was used in 1952 by American psychiatrist MaxLurie on his patients. The following year, he saw progress in two-thirds of depressed patients, naming the medicine “antidepressant.” Its widespread medical use began in the 60s, leading to the discovery of negative effects of abuse which require primarily mental addiction treatment.

Antidepressants are divided into four main groups

It should be borne in mind that withdrawal from antidepressants starts from the group to which the medication belongs.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) increase serotonin concentration in brain function. Serotonin– and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), affect noradrenaline, in addition to serotonin, so they are used when both of these transmitters are defective.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI)  prevent neurotransmitter breakdown, a common occurrence in depression, while tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are similar in effect to the first group but much more aggressive, so they are less often used in treatment today.

Quitting antidepressants will eliminate all physical and mental symptoms of long-term use

Antidepressants cause severe side effects. The most common are cough, headaches, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea, blood pressure drop, dizziness and increased appetite, which leads to obesity. Insomnia, sensitivity to bright light and increased sweating are also characteristics.

Often, severe side effects such as blurred vision, tinnitus, heart problems, bowel problems occur. As antidepressants act on the brain, they can also cause hallucinations, especially when combined with alcohol and opiates.
