Complex painless detoxification from benzodiazepine

razmak dr vorobjev

Benzodiazepines are psychoactive medicines that belong to the group of anxiolytics. The most widely known are Diazepam, Lorazepam, Bromazepam, Xanax (Xalol), Rohypnol, Bensedin.

Although they serve as the main medicines for solving the problems of insomnia and anxiety, they can also stimulate the protective mechanisms of our body.

Benzodiazepines work by helping us relax for a while, forgetting and masking the problem, but after four weeks of consuming, they cause addiction, and a person can no longer live normally without them.

Especially dangerous is the combination of benzodiazepines with alcohol as it causes loss of movement coordination, which is particularly dangerous during driving and is often the cause of traffic accidents.

Benzodiazepines negatively affect the entire physical and psychological state of the body, especially memory. They can lead to so-called anterograde amnesia when a person does not remember specific situations, conversations, events for some time.

Benzodiazepine addiction

After two or three weeks of daily use of benzodiazepine, the body is accustomed to its effects that create a feeling of protection, safety, and stability. After that, the body seeks more, higher doses are needed to maintain that feeling, and this is when their abuse takes place.

Not long after the use of benzodiazepine, a person becomes agitated, paranoid, aggressive, and depressed. In the absence of the substance, there is a barely tolerable syndrome withdrawal syndrome, anxiety, trembling, insomnia, increased salivation, swelling of legs and arms, and sometimes even convulsion.

Suddenly, benzodiazepines, which give inner peace and illusion of life, turn against the person who feels insecure, scared and unable to function normally in any field.

Benzodiazepines cause strong physical and psychological addiction, and they are often used by patients who are already addicted to some substances, most commonly drugs or alcohol. However, they are also used by people with mental problems such as panic attacks, depression, anxiety, and other disorders.

Therefore, before treating benzodiazepine addiction, it is crucial to collect all relevant information regarding the patient’s medical condition, both physical and mental.

Lečenje zavisnosti od benzodiazepina - Dr Vorobjev

Phases of benzodiazepine detoxification

The treatment in our hospital usually lasts 14 days to successfully resolve this complex addiction problem and stabilize the patient’s condition. Diagnosis is the initial stage of treatment and is followed by forming an individual approach to the patient which refers to a combination of special medical methods aimed at painless detoxification of the body for protecting the damaged organs and the patient’s health at the same time.

The detoxification process starts immediately and involves the daily administration of infusion and drugs that shut off changes in the brain that occur due to the absence of benzodiazepines. The symptoms of the crisis also disappear, and their effect is reduced to a minimum.

Detoxification gives the patient the ability to live and function in the future without tablets.

The goal of Dr Vorobjev clinic

The goal of Dr Vorobjev clinic is to discover the cause of the addictive disorder based on all the analyses and approach the whole process of treatment accordingly.

  1. Diagnostics – the first and significant phase of treatment during which the physical and psychological state of the patient is assessed. The standard diagnostic examination for physical condition assessment includes:
  • urine test,
  • tests for hepatitis B and C, HIV infection,
  • general blood analysis,
  • blood biochemical testing,
  • ECG,
  • an internist examination.

The standard diagnostic examination for assessing the psychological condition involves psychodiagnostics (psychological tests are used to determine the level of addiction, the consequences of the use of substances on mental health, to detect the signs of psychological disorders, the presence of depression, the degree of motivation for healing, self-criticality, preservation of voluntary mechanisms).

Having made the diagnosis, the team of doctors develops a treatment plan. If deviations are found in the results, additional tests are carried out, and therapy is prescribed for the accompanying diseases.

Depending on the problem, it is possible to do MRT, EEG, ultrasound, X-ray, endoscopy, medicine, and drug concentration analysis, cardiac examination, neurological examination, endocrinological examination … These are all additional tests that are not included in the package price.

  1. Detoxification – Detoxification lasts for the first few days. Withdrawal symptoms are eliminated, and benzodiazepines are eliminated from the body.During detoxification, patients daily receive infusions and pharmacotherapy (psychostabilizers and abstinence therapy). In addition, regular urine tests are carried out mandatorily until the body is thoroughly cleansed of sedatives. It is imperative that:
  • detox is fast
  • the patient does not feel pain
  • the patient’s sleep and appetite return to normal
  • the patient’s mood becomes stable
  • there is no more anxiety or depression.
  1. Evaluation of results – At the end of treatment, treatment outcomes are evaluated, urine tests are negative for the presence of benzodiazepine, the physical and psychological state of the patient is stable. Preparation for discharge is done, and the patient and his family are given instructions as to how to behave afterward.

In a conversation with a patient, a plan of activity is made, and he is advised on successful rehabilitation and resocialization to return to normal life as soon as possible.

The treatment lasts for 14 days and after it, when no risk of the crisis is estimated, and the benzodiazepine test is negative, the following phase – neurometabolic changes, that is, the phase of the regeneration of what benzodiazepines have damaged – is approached.

In addition to the treatment process, the entire program at Dr. Vorobjev clinic includes transport of patients from the airport or station to our clinic as well as the return after treatment.

It is important to note that doctors and nurses are available to patients24 hours a day and seven days a week. All doctors are certified anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists with 10-25 years of experience. The clinic employs more than 60 people.
